'Tis the season for data collection - are your people getting the best?     June/July 2011

The Importance of Training

Are your field personnel collecting the best data? Training makes the difference!
It’s the height of data-collecting season – now that your personnel are in the field, are you sure the mapping data they are bringing back is professional-grade?

The field utility equipment and software provided by CompassTools is the best in the market, and when you invest in it, be sure to include Trimble Certified Training for the staff who will be using it – both in the field and in the office.

An uncertified class that is only a half-day seminar on the software or an hour on the hardware showing where the buttons are is not adequate for the quality and complexity of today’s mapping technology. Professional-grade equipment deserves professional training.

CompassTools offers two-day, 16-hour classes of Trimble Certified Training, provided by instructors who are teaching the very latest, updated information on the equipment including upgrades and new capabilities. Attendees of CompassTools classes receive Trimble certifications verifying their accomplishment and can use the classes for Continuing Education credits in professional programs. Students who have attended CompassTools training understand the hardware and software combinations and how the interaction between the two make for the best and most useful data.

Don’t let this happen to you:

  • Field personnel are unsure of what they are doing so work is done slowly or not at all, even though personnel are still being paid for their time. This is not the equipment’s fault – it’s complicated precisely because it has so much capability.
  • Resourceful but untrained personnel “figure it out” and bring data back to the office. Even though they have scrolled through the buttons and managed to collect some data, now they have unwittingly altered some internal/default settings of the machine or the software.
  • The data comes in from the field . . . but untrained office personnel don’t know how to input the data to get full use, or ruin earlier data in an attempt to reconcile material.

If you look at the expense of buying the software and hardware, the cost of the training is miniscule and makes all the difference in ensuring your overall investment is worthwhile.

Check out our training schedule over the summer; also, let CompassTools know if you have personnel who need training and would like for us to set up a course for you. We will work with you!

STOP KILLING JUNOS
Our CompassTools repair team has received a lot of Juno units for repair because they won’t turn on.  The repair team has found that the Juno was damaged by the customer BY PUTTING THE BATTERY INTO THE JUNO BACKWARDS OR UPSIDE DOWN.  The repair is not cheap and is not covered by warranty so do your Juno a favor and be sure to put the battery in correctly:

Training Tips

1. Use DeltaPhase data collection techniques - Deltaphase came out back in December 2009, but some mappers are still mapping the old fashioned way. Watch this webinar from Trimble to map with the highest accuracy and efficiency.

2. A lot of time and money can be saved by using advanced data collection techniques in TerraSync like “Nesting” and “Segmenting.”

3. Photos are worth 1000 attributes, and are easy to incorporate into your workflow.

4. Close your file often. A closed file is a safe file.

5. Face south – the majority of the satellites are around the equator. Therefore, you stand a better chance for a position fix if your GPS receiver can see south.
